Unusual Petroglyphs

Seats

Ovals

Grooves

The last two petroglyphs are on smaller rocks. The first example consists of two pecked grooves with a raised ridgeline between them.

The second example consists of an oval rock with several levels of abraided grooves, the center and deepest quite well smoothed.

Seen anything like these petroglyphs before? If you have any ideas, especially concerning the meaning or usage of the carvings shown on these pages, please email James Martin.

The petroglyphs on these pages were recorded by volunteers from America and Europe working on the Ometepe Petroglyph Project. This preliminary data comes from work done in January and February of 1998. Much of the data, including drawings and digital photographs, still needs to be processed. More details on this site will be forthcoming.
